Sally Hunt
Science Focus Program
English Department Chair
Sally is a very experienced focus program teacher. Two years ago, she took a big risk to move from Arts & Humanities, where she had built a thriving program, to switch gears and teach English at the Science Focus Program.
During her first year at the Science Focus Program, she practiced her questioning, built strong relationships with students, and started analyzing ideas like a scientist. She is an avid and excited learner, and she approached the challenge of learning how to serve the science brains in our small community with great energy.
In year two, Sally assisted a new science teacher, Mitch Bern, in teaching the writing portions of junior research. She is open and honest in the areas where she wants to learn and grow. And, she brought a wealth of technical writing skills to support Mitch and his students in conveying their research in new and approachable ways. This collaboration was extremely successful for students and staff and lays the groundwork for even better outcomes when these juniors apply the skills learned with Sally in their senior research next year.
Sally is always willing to try new things and think flexibly about curriculum and instruction. She and Pete White are collaborating this semester with sophomores in What's Your Point. This class meets a graduation requirement that SFP has not been able to meet in the recent past. And, it does so, while also enhancing the research skills of the sophomore class.
It is for her innovation, energy, and commitment to building up scholars and colleagues that I am nominating her for the 2025 LPS Inspire Award. Sally inspires her students and her colleagues every day, and we hope she continues to do so for a long time at the Science Focus Program.
