Why Spark, Why STEAM
First, what is STEAM? STEAM learning is an educational approach that combines science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to guide student inquiry, discussion, and problem-solving. It is a well-rounded approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of STEAM concepts and the importance of creativity in solving real-world problems. Spark Summer Learning provides students the opportunities and resources to explore, wonder, and discover through STEAM learning.
STEAM learning is based on the idea that students learn best when actively engaged in the learning process. STEAM activities are often project-based and collaborative, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems.
"Students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process."
STEAM learning invites students to explore freely, take ownership of their learning, and work together to create, build, and wonder at the young elementary level. As students age, they explore more deeply, take ownership, and work together to solve more complex issues. At Spark, we work to provide age-appropriate curricula designed for learners at every level – kindergarten through 5th grade. Spark is set up to ensure all students thrive because they are excited about learning and actively engaged.
STEAM learning is vital because it prepares students for future jobs. In today's world, many jobs require combining skills from different disciplines. STEAM learning helps students develop the critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills they need to be successful in these jobs. Spark Summer Learning provides students in-depth opportunities to hone their STEAM knowledge and skills. Spark Summer Learning helps excite students about STEAM and ensures they know it is for everyone!
"STEM jobs are expected to grow 10.8% over the next 10 years."
Additionally, STEAM jobs are growing rapidly. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects STEM jobs to grow 10.8% between 2022 and 2032; at the same time, non-STEM occupations are expected to grow 2.3%. And STEM jobs earn more. The median STEM occupation wage in 2022 was nearly $98,000, while the non-STEM median was less than $45,000.
